WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - Head Wrestling Coach
Danny Irwin has announced that after two highly-successful seasons as a graduate assistant,
Cam Timok has been promoted to head assistant coach of the West Liberty University wrestling program.
"Coach Timok made an immediate impact in our program when he arrived two years ago and continues to do so," said Coach Irwin. "It is exciting to be able to promote from within and it was an easy choice as Coach Timok has built a great amount of trust with our student-athletes which puts us in position to track down a National Team Title!"
Timok has played a key role in the West Liberty wrestling program's emergence as an NCAA Division II power. During his two years as a graduate assistant, the Hilltoppers won back-to-back Mountain East Conference and NCAA Division II Super Region 3 championships.
The Black and Gold followed those titles up with strong runs at the NCAA Division II Nationals, finishing fourth at the 2021 finals and returning home with the third-place trophy this past spring. The Hilltoppers have produced nine NCAA Division II All-Americans and three national champions during Timok's two years on staff.
Timok expressed his excitement for the opportunity:
I am beyond excited to be staying on and becoming Head Assistant here on the hilltop. Once the season was over, I was hit with a few different choices and I couldn't find a better fit for myself than staying right where my coaching career was built. Throughout the last two years the coaching staff and I have built something special. This team has a big place in my heart and I couldn't walk away from this program that I have committed my whole hearted effort to. Not to mention the faculty and staff around campus are some of the best out there. We have unfinished business here on the hilltop. I have full trust in our wrestlers and they in turn have that with this coaching staff. There is no place like the hilltop and Climb The Hill.
The Central College (Iowa) graduate earned NCAA Division III All-America honors at 125 and 133 pounds and posted a sparkling 72-12 record while competing for the Dutch. He was a four-time state placer at Hermitage (Va.) High School in Richmond, highlighting his career with a 40-2 record and a Virginia state championship in 2013.
After graduating from Central, Timok spent one season as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Virginia Military Institute before making his way to the hilltop. Timok earned his bachelor's degree at Central College and recently completed his master's degree at West Liberty.
Coach Irwin shared his gratitude for all who made this possible, "I am excited to add this next layer to our program and would like to thank our alumni and friends of the program for sharing my vision of making the Hilltop the premier place to get an education, compete for NCAA Titles and have a first class experience!"
