Wrestling Welcomes Eleven Newcomers for 2021-22

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield wrestling head coach Luke Smith has announced that eleven newcomers will join the Roadrunner program in 2021-22, as part of his first full recruiting class. CSUB welcomes six true freshman, a pair of Division I transfers and three community college transfers to their roster this season, as part of a group expected to add depth and impact across weight classes.

"This class brings a mix of talented freshmen and transfer student-athletes and adds both quantity and quality to our roster," said CSUB Head Coach Luke Smith. "We're bringing in multiple state placers, All-Americans and champions, and every one of these guys are capable of making an impact on our program."

Jake Andrews | HWT | Bakersfield, California | Frontier High School

Competed for Frontier High School in Bakersfield, Calif…Coached by Carlo Franciotti…Earned 2021 All-American honors with a 5^th place finish at NHSCA Senior Nationals and a 3^rd place result at the 2021 National High School Showcase…California State Invitational runner-up at 285 pounds…Named 1^st-Team All-Area and qualified for the state tournament as a senior…Titans upper weight team MVP and Frontier Male Athlete of the Year in 2021...Also competed in football for FHS.

Born December 29, 2002, in Bakersfield, Calif…Son of Jason and Tessa Andrews…Plans to major in Criminal Justice and pursue a career as a game warden.

Coach Smith on Andrews: "Jake is built in Bakersfield and a guy were very excited about. He has a ton of raw talent, and we can't wait to see what he can do at CSUB."

Tyler Deen | 149 | Albuquerque, New Mexico | Buchanan High School | Nebraska

Wrestled at Buchanan High School in Clovis, Calif…Competed for Coach Troy Tirapelle…Two-time CIF State Placer…Junior National Freestyle All-American…Captured New Mexico State Championship while wrestling for Rio Rancho High School…Led Buchanan to three CIF State Championships…Finished his HS career with a record of 146-37…Was 11-5 in one season at the University of Nebraska…Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2021.

Born December 9, 1999, in Albuquerque, N.M…Son of Dustin and Janelle Deen…Plans to major in Electrical Engineering.

Coach Smith on Deen: "We're excited to have Tyler back in the Central Valley. He's a very talented wrestler and will challenge for the starting spot at 149 pounds."

Jacob Hansen | 184 | Simi Valley, California | Royal High School | Moorpark College

Competed for Royal High School in Simi Valley, Calif…Coached by Richard Carillo…Three-time Coastal Canyon League First-Team selection and Highlanders' team MVP…CIF State Medalist in 2019, the first in RHS history…Led team to CIF State Championship…Also competed at Moorpark College for Coach Lindley Kistler, where he won a 2019 State Championship.

Born on April 26, 2001, in Simi Valley, Calif…Son of Michael and Jana Hansen…Plans to major in Kinesiology.

Aaron Ibarra | Guadalupe, California | Righetti High School

Competed for Righetti High School in Santa Maria, Calif…Coached by Justin Bronson…CIF State qualifier…Led the Warriors to a CIF Championship in 2019…Placed 4^th at the Arizona Regional Folk Style Showcase…Also played football at RHS, earning team MVP honors as a senior.

Born June 21, 2002, in Santa Maria, Calif…Son of Gabino and Cecilia Ibarra…Plans to major in Kinesiology and pursue a career as a Physical Education teacher.

Christian Landin | 184 | Bakersfield, Calif. | Frontier High School

Competed for Frontier High School in Bakersfield, Calif…Coached by Carlo Franciotti…Ranked as the #4 recruit in California in the 182-pound weight class…Two-time CIF State qualifier…Finished among the top-12 in the state as a junior…Led FHS to a Southwest Yosemite League Championship.

Born October 8, 2002, in Bakersfield, Calif…Son of Jose and Rebecca Landin…Brother Jose also competes for CSUB…Plans to pursue a Finance major.

Coach Smith on Landin: "Christian is another local talent with a lot of technical ability and we're happy to keep him in Bakersfield alongside his brother Jose."

Competed for Bakersfield High School in Bakersfield, Calif., and Clovis North High School in Fresno, Calif…Coached by Andy Varner and Ben Holscher, respectively…2021 USA Wrestling Folkstyle National All-American, finishing 3^rd at 152 pounds…Placed 7^th at the 2021 NHSCA Senior Nationals to earn an additional All-American honor…2019 Junior National Greco runner-up…Runner up at 138 pounds in 2021 California State Invitational.

Born October 24, 2002, in Bakersfield, Calif…Son of Hector and Natalee Lucio…Plans to major in Nursing.

Mateo Morales | 197 | Fresno, California | Clovis West High School | Fresno State

Competed for Clovis West High School in Fresno, Calif…Competed for Coach Kyle Gilcrest…Placed 7^th at the 2019 California State Tournament…Four-Time All Tri-River Athletic Conference selection and Four-Time All-Area honoree…CWHS MVP in 2019 and 2020…Also competed in football, earning All-League and All-Valley accolades as a junior and senior…Spent the 2020-21 season at Fresno State, seeing action in a pair of dual meets.

Born March 6, 2002, in Ventura, Calif…Son of Ambros and Cheryl Morales…Plans to major in Child, Adolescent and Family Studies.

Louie Ramos | 141 | Selma, California | Selma High School | Central College

Competed for Selma High School in Selma, Calif…Coached by Sam Lopez, Joey Areyano and Jose Mendoza…Placed at the 2018 California State Tournament…Also wrestled at Fresno City College and Central College…State Junior College runner up at FCC…Earned NCAA DIII All-American honors at Central College.

Born March 27, 2000, in Selma, Calif…Son of Luis Ramos II…Plans to major in Kinesiology.

Isaac Salas | 141 | Los Angeles, California | St. John Bosco High School

Attended St. John Bosco High School…Coached by Ruben Valencia…Top-ranked wrestling commit in California at 138 pounds by California Wrestler, and 10^th ranked by MatScouts…2020 CIF State Runner-Up in 138-pound weight class…Led team to 2021 Trinity League Championship.

Born April 2, 2002, in Las Vegas, Nev…Son of Ignacio and Cynthia Salas…Majoring in Criminal Justice with hopes of being a police officer after graduation.

Coach Smith on Salas: "Isaac is a tank. He's an extremely strong and aggressive wrestler who is hard to score points against."

Jayden Smith | 174 | El Centro, California | Brawley Union High School | NE Oklahoma A&M

Wrestled for Brawley Union High School in El Centro, Calif…Coached by Tony Leon…Led the Wildcats to three consecutive Division 3 State Championships from 2016-19…Also competed at Northeast Oklahoma A&M for Coaches Joe Renfro and Dustin May…Earned NJCAA All-American Status in 2020 with a third-place finish at 174 pounds…Helped the Norsemen win a 2020 West-Central Regional Championship and place as the NJCAA National runners-up.

Born March 6, 2001, in El Centro, Calif…Son of Marc and Victoria Smith…Majoring in Kinesiology.

Coach Smith on Smith: "Jayden is extremely strong and very physical. His ability to wrestle out of tough situations makes him very dangerous."

Johnathon Viveros | 157 | Kingsburg, California | Kingsburg High School

Competed for Kingsburg High School in Kingsburg, Calif…Coached by Bryce Hammond, Coleman Hammond and Clemente Moreno…Ranked third in California at 138 pounds…Placed 7^th in the state tournament as a junior in 2020…Named Kingsburg team MVP in 2021.

Born October 24, 2001, in Clovis, Calif…Son of John and Leticia Viveros…Plans to major in Business with a focus on accounting.

Coach Smith on Viveros: "Johnathon reminds me a lot of Russell Rohlfing and wrestles with a relentless pace that breaks his opponents."

Bakersfield's eleven member recruiting class joins 19 returning letterwinners, including 2020 NCAA Qualifiers Chance Rich and Angelo Martinoni and 2019 Pac-12 Champion Josh Loomer. The Roadrunners finished 7-6 during their last full season of competition in 2018-19.

"This group will join our returning student-athletes and give us great depth at each weight class," Smith added. "We cannot wait to get the entire team into the room and get to work on this season."
