Wrestling Welcomes Eleven Newcomers for 2021-22

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield wrestling head coach Luke Smith has announced that eleven newcomers will join the Roadrunner program in 2021-22, as part of his first full recruiting class. CSUB welcomes six true freshman, a pair of Division I transfers and three community college transfers to their roster this season, as part of a group expected to add depth and impact across weight classes.
 
"This class brings a mix of talented freshmen and transfer student-athletes and adds both quantity and quality to our roster," said CSUB Head Coach Luke Smith. "We're bringing in multiple state placers, All-Americans and champions, and every one of these guys are capable of making an impact on our program."
 
Jake Andrews | HWT | Bakersfield, California | Frontier High School
 
Competed for Frontier High School in Bakersfield, Calif…Coached by Carlo Franciotti…Earned 2021 All-American honors with a 5th place finish at NHSCA Senior Nationals and a 3rd place result at the 2021 National High School Showcase…California State Invitational runner-up at 285 pounds…Named 1st-Team All-Area and qualified for the state tournament as a senior…Titans upper weight team MVP and Frontier Male Athlete of the Year in 2021...Also competed in football for FHS.
 
Born December 29, 2002, in Bakersfield, Calif…Son of Jason and Tessa Andrews…Plans to major in Criminal Justice and pursue a career as a game warden.

Wrestled at Buchanan High School in Clovis, Calif…Competed for Coach Troy Tirapelle…Two-time CIF State Placer…Junior National Freestyle All-American…Captured New Mexico State Championship while wrestling for Rio Rancho High School…Led Buchanan to three CIF State Championships…Finished his HS career with a record of 146-37…Was 11-5 in one season at the University of Nebraska…Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2021.
 
Born December 9, 1999, in Albuquerque, N.M…Son of Dustin and Janelle Deen…Plans to major in Electrical Engineering.

Bakersfield's eleven member recruiting class joins 19 returning letterwinners, including 2020 NCAA Qualifiers Chance Rich and Angelo Martinoni and 2019 Pac-12 Champion Josh Loomer. The Roadrunners finished 7-6 during their last full season of competition in 2018-19.
 
"This group will join our returning student-athletes and give us great depth at each weight class," Smith added. "We cannot wait to get the entire team into the room and get to work on this season."
